Due to Japan's stringent car ownership regulations, vehicles must undergo comprehensive bi-annual inspections (known as 車検, or, "Shaken") in order to keep their cars road-worthy. This inspection is considerably more intensive than what is found in most countries, and failure to comply can result in penalties that even include jail time! Its safe to say that any car being driven on the roads of Japan is going to be a well-maintained machine.​​

The Japanese economy is very unique compared with other highly-developed nations. By keeping both salaries and cost-of-living low (compared to Western standards), residents are able to enjoy a high-quality standard of living in a safe and clean environment, without as many financial concerns.
